The American Revolution Experience traveling exhibit highlights the diverse perspectives and daily lives of ordinary people during the Revolutionary War, offering an immersive way to understand the human side of America’s fight for independence.
Rather than focusing solely on generals or political leaders, the experience emphasizes the contributions and challenges faced by ordinary people, including Patriots, Loyalists, women, African Americans, Native Americans, and international allies. Visitors are encouraged to consider the difficult choices individuals faced, such as pledging loyalty to the Patriot cause or remaining loyal to the British Crown.
The experience highlights the human impact of the Revolution, showing how ordinary people endured hardships, fought for liberty, and navigated complex social dynamics. Examples include:
Women and families coping with the uncertainties of war and supporting the Patriot cause.
African Americans and enslaved individuals who sought freedom or were caught between Loyalist and Patriot forces.
Loyalists and former British soldiers who adapted to new lives in the colonies.
International allies who contributed to the war effort and shaped the outcome of key battles.
How were the lives of ordinary people affected by the events of the American Revolutionary War? As tensions mounted across the Thirteen Colonies, the entire Revolutionary Generation was faced with a difficult choice: to pledge loyalty to the Patriot cause and the prospect of a new nation, or remain loyal to the King as subjects of the British Empire. How would you choose?
Bernardo de Gálvez was no patriot. But like the patriots, he found an enemy in Great Britain. El enemigo de mi enemigo es mi amigo.
Winsor Fry spent his first years as a free man fighting for American liberty. But what did life in the new nation have in store for him?
Sarah Benjamin's long, eventful life included twice speaking with George Washington on the frontlines of the American Revolution.
Thayendanegea (known to the British as Joseph Brant) knew the American Revolution was a civil war—in more ways than one.
The visages of the American Revolution can still be seen today in the United States, either in the names of towns, state parks, and roads or in the memorials commemorating the men and women who fought for American independence.
The American Revolution was more than a series of battles, it was a struggle shaped by difficult choices, diverse experiences, and lasting ideals. Explore the themes that defined the era, from choosing sides and military service to freedom, slavery, post-war life, and the Revolution's enduring legacy.
